E-commerce site structure

Internet plays more and more important role in our life. Now it is used not only as means of obtaining information and sending e-mail messages, it became a significant tool in doing business, in e-commerce particularly. At web sites of most companies selling any products, it is possible not only find information about the company and its products, but also buy any product of this company. Or it is also possible to buy products from specialty web-stores. One doesn't have to go shopping and try to find what you need, it is possible to buy anything one need in the Internet.

Because of such a rapid development of Internet and, especially, of e-commerce, the number of web-stores increases every day. A question arises: "What is a web-store/e-commerce site and what is the difference between it and an ordinary web site?". We will try to consider it in his article.

So, first of all, E-commerce site differs from ordinary informative web site in being a tool of purchase and sell process. That is it is customer can choose and buy a product and pay for it with the help of payment system (we will tell about payment systems below).

E-commerce site structure should be very simple and convenient in use. Otherwise, customer will just not use your web-store services. Of course, Site navigation should contain several sections which are present at every site: About Us and Contact Us. But the main thing at E-commerce site is product catalog. We will not dwell on catalog structure because we talked on this in this article: How to create on-line catalog?

If your company offers clients some additional tools and sections (for example, size chart, FAQ, gift cards, etc.), you can place these sections and tools in Customer Service section, so that not to assign a separate place for every service in main navigation.

However, a separate place in navigation should be assigned to a section devoted to sales and discounts for the products of web-store. Moreover, this section should be placed in the plain view. Reasons for this are absolutely clear: aim of this section is to attract as many would-be customers as possible.

Shopping cart is a very important section of E-commerce site. In this section, customers can view the products they chose before going to the order payment.

There is no doubt that for proper work of E-commerce site it is absolutely necessary to set up payment system for customers to be able to pay for the products bought at the site. There are different payment systems and one should choose the very payment which meets requirements and needs. In this article we will only enumerate the most popular payment systems:

  1. Paypal
  2. TradEnable
  3. eCharge Phone
  4. Mondex
  5. Internet Cash
  6. e-Gold
  7. MoneyBookers
